Pokemon Graphite - Umm, Didn't I Play This Game 32 Years Ago?

Here, I have an exclusive screenshots from Pokemon Graphite, the Pokemon game slated to be released in late 2030, post apocalypse. Imagine all the cool futuristic things we'll have by then, from flying cars to instant cancer removal pills, and of course Plutonium will be sold at every corner drug store. But somethings don't ever change, Pokemon is one of those things.

Why do Nintendo owners put up with Pokemon? Sure, Nintendo doesn't change much with their games, often times they just recycle winning formulas. Though sales inevitably slow, technology becomes more advanced and then the formula is remixed to improve sales and utilize modern technology. From Mario to Legend of Zelda to Tetris, Nintendo moves with the times, even if slowly.

This isn't the case with Pokemon, every single damned Pokemon game is the same, literally the same, besides the difference in GUI and some prettier illustrations there are no differences, no improvements, nothing.

Nintendo fanboys must be idiots, or kids just born into the world after the previous iteration of Pokemon, because one way or the other people aren't taking the fact it's the same game from nine years ago into account.

The DS is not an incapable machine, look at Final Fantasy 3, it looks amazing and is in full 3D, heck, if a Pokemon game MUST stay 2D because it's a cartoon (flawed reasoning, but lets go for it anyway), then Children of Mana is the perfect example of how 2D should be done on the DS.

Sadly with the sales of Pokemon on the DS being as high as ever it looks like the DS 2 version of Pokemon is going to be the same as before. Whats really aggravating is that Nintendo protects Pokemon more so than any of its other franchises, you probably won't get a cease and desist for remaking Legend of Zelda or Mario but you can certainly expect your mothers head in the mail if you try to touch Pokemon.
#Edit: I did buy Pokemon Pearl, I recognize full well that I'm an idiot Nintendo fanboy.

Flipside

Half-Life 2 is a first person shooter, right? People make mods for it involving shooting right? So just how is it that someone makes a Half-Life 2 mod that is a platformer centering around a schizophrenic nutcase? I'm not so sure, but I'm glad they did, 'Flipside' is the most creative Half-Life 2 mod in every way, from graphics to art to gameplay.

'Flipside' is a mod made by Team 3, you play as Hanibal Hildorf, a shadow puppet suffering from multiple personalities, one in which he percieves the world as happy, another in which he sees the world as evil.

Changing between personalities is completely up to the player, As you jump your way through Hanibals world you'll find that you need to change between his two psyche's, Hanibal as evil cannot jump high but can climb walls and attack enemies, Hanibal as good can jump high and his 'enemies' are cutesy animals that push him around without dealing any health damage.

Both worlds are quiet imaginative, while trees may be nice'n'green on one side they are eyeballs on the other, a happy nurse bunny is an evil nurse bunny drenched in blood when viewed from Hanibals alternate personality.

Heres an example of both worlds:

Yes, there are many gameplay possibilities in Flipside and many are exploited, it is a very unique game and undoubtedly one that deserves lots and lots of attention. Unfortunately some of the gameplay elements feel underdeveloped, jumping and attacking just don't feel right. Perhaps I've been spoiled by the likes of Super Mario, but it would have been nice to have a little bit more response from the attack key.

Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer Gameplay

While it's sad that it won't be taking any advantage of Windows Live Anywhere features it still retains the gameplay of past iterations.

Call of Juarez DirectX 10 Demonstration

Most of the advantages DirectX 10 seems to give CoJ is in lighting and texturing, with some added geometry to boot. The overall look of CoJ in DirectX 10 is far more bright and realistic than DirectX 9.0.

Working For Nintendo

It isn't all fun'n'games... oh wait. This is a video made as an entry to the NintendoShortCuts contest, it's in the top ten selection. Looks like working at Nintendo isn't about Karoshi for the great Miyamoto san after all.

Lair Screenshots

This game looks incredible, you'd think you're playing a movie in the gigantic worlds the game presents the player with. Even the human models in the game are detailed to the same degree of detail you would expect from FPS titles.

Amazing Detail in Soul Calibur 4

Instead of just going 'boobies!' and pausing the video on 00:27 if you look at the other still shots you'll find there is an incredible amount of detail not centered around the aforementioned excercise balls. The amount of detail is insane, you can see the varnish on the wood and the same varnish wearing off, you can even see individual stitches in the clothes.

The Sony Protection Group is a Living Joke

Perhaps the name and intent of the group speaks for itself but just reading a typical news entry from them makes them sound like an evangelical Christian cult of sorts "We should ALL be thankful that God of War is a SONY franchise and appeared on PS2 with PSP and PS3 versions on the way".

Their mission statement speaks for itself:

The Sony Protection Group (SPG) is a site, group, and movement created to preserve the image of Sony and focus on positive news.

SPG was founded due to the negativity and hatred being displayed towards Sony. Instead of spreading lies, FUD, and rumors like most gaming websites, we at SPG are trying to build a place for Sony fans and PlayStation fans to get the real facts.

The SPG focuses on what is good and positive about our favorite gaming console, the PlayStation. As users of the PlayStation brand, we are well placed to explore the best and worst of the systems we have chosen. While some of us feel that Sony makes the superior console and handheld system, we encourage our writers and our members to focus on the positive aspects of PlayStation gaming without the need to ridicule other people's console choice.

To our readers and visitors we wish you happy gaming!

What makes no sense to anyone with half a brain is why someone would form a 'protection group' for an evil heartless corporation hell beant on making money. Whats worse is that this is Sony, the same company that has dominated gaming for the last two whole generations.

Nintendo, the company everyone loves, has been having a hard time for the exact same time period and no one has bothered making a 'protection group' for them, like it's anybodies business protecting a heartless corporation, perhaps even Nintendo fanboys acknoweldge that (or are too disenchanted and disorganized to know how to make a website).

Now, though, after a couple of PR slip ups it seems that Sony is not only an under dog but the battered and bruised neighbourhood stray dog, kicked out of its loving home now it pants and begs for food as it goes door to door hence it deserves love and kindness and 'protection' from the big bad biased liberal.. erm, I mean anti-Sony fanboys.

Of course when you have people on such a noble crusade, convinced of being right and everybody being out to get them, they end up cheating to try to get attention. Like toddlers trying to get to eat the cookies before Dinner, jumping up and down and yelling.

Mission to make the front page of digg.com

I had the idea that we should start a mission to get to the front page of digg.com. We will first create an article thread on our website, then i'll post it on digg.com and all of our members will digg it up, so it can make the front page. Digg is an extremely popular site, so if we were to accomplish this, we get a whole lot of members and alot of publicity.

List your name here if you are apart of this and immediatly create an account on digg.com. (please create the account right now)

http://digg.com/register

Well they haven't been very successful with that, though one of their attempts was quite humorous to say the least. Freudian slip anyone?

If someone is going to point out the obvious fact this is not representitive of the majority of Playstation 3 owners (as one can hope) then all I can say is that I agree, though it isn't limited to the SPG.

Halo DS Next Week - Sez Cassamassina

Apparently Halo DS is really real and we'll be seeing it for the first time next week, says Matt Casamassina, the lying scounderal of IGN fame.

After claiming he had played Halo on the DS the internet went on fire, most, though, were smart enough to just dismiss his words as sensationalistic bullshit.

But hey what the hey, if the DS can pull of Xbox like graphcis I wouldn't mind being wrong.

Playstation 3 Cracked - Games 'Booting'

Ah, sweet, sweet victory for the homebrew scene (and pirates). Firmware 1.10 and 1.11 have both been cracked allowing the Playstation 3 to boot 'backups' of Blu-Ray titles. SCE naturally loathes whats happening and are planning to go as far as suing people who crack the Playstation 3 firmware.

Dave Karraker of SCE says that "the best we can do as a company is to make our security that much stronger and aggressively pursue legal action against anyone caught trying to use an exploit in an illegal manner".

Of course he didn't mention just what the definition of 'illegal' is in his world. Sony has tried and failed to stop the PSP homebrew scene (and pirates) from cracking the PSP firmware, perhaps it's only a matter of time before Playstation 3 owners will enjoy the same freedoms with their hardware.

Just a point of mention, booting games does not mean playing games, the games boot but they don't play, obviously this is a minor technicality that will eventually be solved.

'Realism' in (War) Games

There are many titles based on popular historic (World War 2) conflicts that claim to be 'realistic', though none really come within a hairs breadth of 'realism'. No sir, I don't think the typical 101st airborne grunt strafed, jumped into mid air then hit the floor prone and nocked out a German soldier with a headshot using a Karabiner 98K he had swiped three minutes ago.

When a developer says 'realistic World War 2' simulation he really means to say is 'the Germans speak German and the Americans speak American' (or something to that effect) 'oh and the Karbiner 98k is pin point accurate and gets one shot one kills everytime and you can't reload the M1 Garand until you've used up a clip', of course if you're really lucky they might add 'if a grenade explodes near you, you'll experience a disorienting effect, we have also implemented a cover system to provide maximum interaction with your environment'.

In Day of Defeat: Source if a grenade explodes near you but doesn't kill you your screen will go still with the last image you saw, the sound may also temporarily turn off. The question is, 'how realistic is this?'. If a greande did go off near you and gives you such a trauma to the point you're virtually blinded and deaf would you still be able to run around? Or would you fall to the floor in some way shape or form? It's an impact trauma, it's meant to push you in some way.

The cover systems used in games thusfar make no sense from a realistic stand point. Why is it than in games such as 'Rainbow Six: Vegas' that use a very developed (and cool) cover system does the camera go from first person to third person? When a person is in cover they don't usually see around corners, wheres the realism in that? I understand that it might have something to do with orientation for the player but even so, developers should find another way to provide said orientation when in cover.

Now to add to that, online Multiplayer games suck when it comes to squads, single player can get away with scripting and AI but online just plain old sucks. It isn't that if in a typical 'realistic' online multiplayer game the team actually works like a squad they end up losing - quite the opposite, it's just that people play online multiplayer games because they want to have fun, and they won't have fun if they do what someone else wants them to do.

I'm not one to just say how bad everything is without giving suggestions as to how things can be improved. I think the best way to solve the issue of the 'every man for himself syndrome' is by giving people their own mini AI-squads in online multiplayer games. Have them play the leader of a three man team, given the other two players will be controlled by the computer it will mean that they will listen to the orders of their commanding player, after all bots play to make the player happy. This will literally force players to use team work, granted it will be with AI bots but it will get people used to the idea of issuing and perhaps even recieving commands which can naturally extend to other human players.

Now finally, my biggest qualm with 'realistic' shooters. Why no gore? If someone dies from an explosion right next to him why does he fly three hundred feet into the air and lands in a ditch on the other side of the map yet is still in one piece with no bruises or signs of trauma? I want 'Saving Private Ryan' type gore, I want to see peoples limbs fly off and see them alive but incapable of doing anything about it, I want to see guts spilling when a person gets stabbed, I want to see tanks squash enemies, not push them away. We have advanced physics engines these days, we can literally simulate water but we can't simulate blood and flying limbs? What kind of world is this?

Before people try to bury me in a tidal of 'you idiot!' or 'it's just a game!' or 'maybe you just suck at online games!' (yeah ok, so I do) I want to make it absoloutely clear I have nothing against games like Gears of War or Brothers in Arms or Day of Defeat: Source. They do what they do really well - entertain. However I want them to entertain me more than they already do, I like to be immersed in a world and am willing to suck badly in a game so long as I find it authentic, to that end I have these gripes with games that claim to be 'realistic' but aren't close enough to 'real' to satisfy my lust for realism.

Xbox Live vs PSN

Aaron Greenberg, group manager of Xbox Live gives his insights into what makes Xbox Live so much different and so much better than the PSN during an interivew on 'Bonus Round'. User genereted content or lack thereof (fake E3 2006 promises anyone?) is also discussed as well as future developments for XNA that gives people the ability to create games without writing a single line of code.

During an interview Aaron Greenberg mentioned the three best things that Sony was doing with the PSN were,
  1. Actually doing it.
  2. Their store is good, not better than Xbox Live MarketPlace, just 'different'.
  3. Original Playstation 1 games

Interesting he didn't mention anywhere that it was free, this was to him, Aaron replied it's 'not important' and that he didn't think it was 'free vs paid' because of Xbox Live silver users being very active on the network.

When pushed hard about the price for multiplayer Aaron said that the consumer satisfaction rate was high and most people thought it was great value. Looks like Xbox Live owners are just too happy to pay the $50 a year. He also went on to imply that Xbox Live multiplayer provides a more consistant feel throughout all games through a universal friends list and voice support in all games, unlike the PSN.

On the point of 'Games for Windows' Aaron says that they're trying to bring Xbox Live to the PC and that all developer resentment that may be aimed towards 'Games for Windows' is because of the standards being set to qualify such as fast loading and quick installs.

User genereted content is 'getting there', Aaron says that integrating Torque-X into XNA makes it very easy to create games and made a promise that as someone who has 'never written a line of code' that he was going to make a game on XNA.

Furthermore he adds that it is 'definitely possible' to have a scenario where a person makes a map for Halo 3 on the PC, submits it for consideration and if it is approved is ptu online to be shared.

John Carmack Shows off New Game Engine - At An Apple Conference!

John Carmack has unveiled a new game (dubbed 'Tech 5') engine and glimpses of a new IP that ID has been working on for the last few years. Whats surprising is that this game will be shown on a PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Mac at E3.

Though that isn't all, clearly Mr. Carmack wants to impress Mac owners making it clear that there is yet another (exclusive?) Mac related announcement thats going to be made at E3.

Sign of changing times?

The Most Under Appreciated Game of This Generation

It is a bald statement, to claim something for an entire generation of consoles and hardware before the generation is even over. Though I feel safe in my claim for never in the history of gaming has such a quality title completely slipped under the radar.

Why Kameo? Not that difficult to understand once you look into the circumstances under which it was released. The main complaint behind the Xbox 360 launch line up was that there were no 'real' next-gen games. I guess since Kameo is supposedly targetted at a younger audience next generetion graphics, unique gameplay, epic story and an incredibly immersive world just isn't enough.

Whats interesting is that RARE obviously loved Kameo, the graphics engine was built for it, the same one looked just plain bad on Perfect Dark Zero but for Kameo? Simply breath taking, the water effects were truly masterful. Bungies Frankie keeps boasting about the water in Halo 3 though everything he is so proud of has already been done in Kameo.

Each elementel warrior in Kameo is lovingly detailed and definitely unique, so are the different worlds and the many variations of enemies you take on. There are real time day/night cycles that take place as you play and fantastic lighting to boot. Kameos world oozes detail, the ooze probably made from the love and sweat RARE has poured into it.

Yet, after all that, everyone was interested in seeing if Perfect Dark Zero would be the new Halo of Microsoft. A thousand curses upon the damned Xbox, it has been type cast to FPS titles!

Whats funny is that most will say the most under appreciated game for the Xbox 360 thusfar is Viva Pinata, yet given the number of people who say it is under appreciated it surely couldn't be THAT unloved. Kameo was the best game in the Xbox 360 launch line up but it was over looked, the Xbox 360 isn't targetted at a general audience, it's sad but true, both RAREs major games for the Xbox 360 haven't sold well, and all for the wrong reasons.

Shadow Run Machinima

Creators of Red vs Blue tackle Shadow Run in their new Machinima, '1-800-MAGIC'.

Battle of the Upscalers - Playstation 3 VS Xbox 360

It seems like even upscaling is subject to qualitative differences, the Xbox 360 is clearly cleaning up images wherein the Playstation 3 seems to be bluring out the jagged edges.
